A Great and Terrible Beauty

by Libba Bray

I read a great review about this book on Jenclair's blog A Garden Carried in the Pocket, and have been wanting to read it for some time. Finally have it in my hands, but I just couldn't get into it. Something about the writing style just fell flat with me, and my mind kept wandering. So after forty pages I put it aside, perhaps to come back to later.

  1. That has happened to be in the past, and sometimes when I come back to the book in question I end up loving it.

  2. Ooops! Sorry you didn't like it, Jeanne. I enjoyed the first much more than the last half, so maybe this one isn't for you. I really didn't care for the next in the series much, either.

  3. Good for you for knowing when to quit. I have a difficult time abandoning books. Usually if I do abandon, I'll try and pick it up later (months or sometimes years).

I read this book on vacation last year but didn't really enjoy it, even though I muddled through.

  5. Hi Jeane! Thanks for visiting my blog! I'll add your link to my blogroll. :)

Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy this book. There are times that we have such moments, due to our reading moods or the fact that it's just not our cup of tea... hopefully you'll enjoy it next time if you do pick it up later.

  6. Blah! Don't you hate it when that happens??
I read to about 40 pages as well then give up if I can't get into it.

Kind of funny - I reviewed this same book today! Although it wasn't so much the writing style as the content that let me down. I'm amazed, though, because I know a ton of people who really loved it. To each her own!

  8. Count me as another person who started this book and wasn't feeling it. I put it aside to try again later, but I haven't gotten up the energy to give it a second shot just yet.

  9. I'm half way through and enjoying it just fine so far! I hope the second half doesn't fall flat.

  10. Nymeth- Yes, I've put aside and returned to several books before, with good results. This will probably be one of those.

Jenclair- Quite all right! I never would have tried it if not for your review. Too bad the series doesn't continue well.

Trish- It's hard sometimes to know when to give up and continue with something else.

Stephanie- Almost thought I was the only one not enjoying it, I read so many positive reviews!

Melody- You're welcome, and thanks for the link! It's actually surprising how often my mood affects appreciation of what I'm reading.

Lauren- Yes. I usually try at least fifty pages before calling it quits.

Paperdiet Books- It was this book's wide popularity that got me curious, but this one just didn't appeal to me.

Cq- Well, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.

Suey- Hope you like it all the way!
