Non-Fiction Five Challenge

Okay, I know I used to dismiss challenges "I never do reading challenges!" because I hated feeling obligated to read a book that was boring or annoying me (which is what I'm going through right now with Emma, augh!) But I still have all these heaps of books in my bedroom, and I've just found two more challenges that look really cool. So.... I'm signing up for Trish's Non-Fiction Five! Here's the rules:

1.Read 5 non-fiction books during the months of May - September, 2009

2.Read at least one non-fiction book that is different from your other choices

3.If interested, sign up with the link to your NFF Challenge post

At first I was going to do five books about animals, and one different, but then I decided that's not really a challenge for me, since I already read tons of animal books. So here's my picks (off my shelf):

Ice Bound by Dr. Jerri Nielsen- I won this book in a givewaway from someone, but now I can't remember who it was. If you gave away this book on your blog (months and months ago) can you remind me?

Invincible by Vince Papale- This one's about a bartender who became an NFL football player at age 30. A tribute to my husband's love for football.

It's Not About the Bike by Lance Armstrong- I don't know much about Armstrong, but when I found this one at a library sale it looked interesting.

The Ra Expeditions by Thor Heyerdahl- I enjoyed reading Kon-Tiki so much, I ordered this one from Paperback Swap as soon as I could find it.

The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell- This one has been on my TBR forever. I could never find a copy at the library or to swap for, but finally picked up one at a local surplus sale a few weeks ago. I was so thrilled!

  1. Jeane--you read the most varied and fascinating books! I'm so glad you joined the challenge. I mentioned this in response to your comment on my blog, but in case you didn't see--you are free to change your selections at any time. As long as you read at least 5 non-fiction books in the 5 months, you suceed at the challenge. :) There is NOTHING more downright rotten than being tied to a book you hate. Enjoy!!

  2. Last year was my first time experiencing challenges, and I only signed up for four, worried about being able to complete them. But this year, I've signed up for a lot more, just reminding myself that even if I don't finish, it's still fun, and I love to read the reviews of others in the challenges.
Have fun with this one! It seems like you read a lot of non-fiction already, so it should be a breeze!

  3. Bermudaonion- Thanks!

Trish- Thanks for answering my question, and for the compliment on my choices! I'm planning on reading one a month- and looking forward to it!

Shelley- I always thought I'd never do challenges, and here I've signed up for three! Most of my nonfiction reading is usually about animals or nature, so I am trying to make it a stretch for myself.

  4. You're always an excellent source of non-fiction recommendations, so I've no doubt you'll have no trouble with the challenge!

  5. Now there's a challenge I'd love to join, I usually enjoy non-fiction more than fiction. But I'll be moving house (which will include some serious downsizing) in the coming months, so there won't be much reading time.
I remember Kon Tiki, I'm sure I've still got it somewhere, so I'll put in on my reread list. And I've just finished The Other End: it went straight to my "reread at least once a year" shelf. You're going to love it! I'm trying to persuade my dog to read it, so she'll appreciate my efforts to communicate with her :)

  6. Nymeth- Thanks! I think it will be fun.

Mrs. J- Good luck with the move. I hope downsizing doesn't include the culling of a library? I hate it when I have to get rid of books!

  7. 'Fraid so.
It's horrible, yes. I started thinking about it a year ago, and I've been happily procrastinating ever since. I'm afraid, though, there's no escape this time. :)

  8. Good for you! I'm mulling over the idea of signing up for this challenge, but I haven't made up my mind.
